Primeras Abroad was born from a vital need to encourage first-generation Latina students to take the risk of pursuing international education. This event is being created because of a significant disparity between college enrollment and study abroad participation: while Hispanic and Latino students represent approximately 21.2% of all U.S. postsecondary enrollment, they make up only 12.2% of students studying abroad. This gap persists because first-gen latino students often face complex barriers that can persuade them against traveling, including high costs, job commitments, a lack of institutional structures, and family members' disapproval of traveling.
